Postby Jantima » Wed Apr 11, 2007 2:08 pm

A group of friend of mine are having a great website where they discuss about the Global Warming and all the problems related to it.

I wonder what you people think about, and if you are discussing about it at school of if you heard anything interesting on TV or whatever.

If you do, I would love to share opinions and knowlegde.

Here's my theory. Note that I have no facts with the following statement and I don't feel like doing some research right now.

Considering that there was an Ice Age long ago, and then you fast-foward to the early 1900s; there's a considerable difference in temperatures right? So this to me says that if global warming does in fact exist, it would be a natural process. Pollution and such may just accelerate it a little, but in the end we couldn't do anything about it.

And a few hangups I have about global warming mainly because weather is so irregular. We can make all the predictions we want for short term, but in long term we don't know what will happen. I mean, over my spring break it snowed in my home town 5 times in the same week. Yes I do live in Alaska, but this is the southern part of Alaska where snow isn't as common. And the fact that we had snow in late March to early April is very, very rare for us. Frost in mid April here in Idaho isn't very common either which it's happened the last three days in a row. These may just be coincidence, but I'm just saying temperatures are too irregular to determine if there is global warming.

I'll say this again, this is just a theory of mine and I have no evidence posted to back it up. Maybe later I'll do some research if I feel like it.

I´m in the same thoughts as you Merry. In Sweden for example there has been wheather that allowed growth of grapes and the Baltic Sea has also been frozen between Sweden(Umea) to Finland(Vasa)

I dont know how it is in other parts of the world but here it seems that people forgive the good and bad weather very fast.

They did a series on TV over here in the UK (done by the BBC) called "Are we Changing Planet Earth?" and I watched one of the episodes which dealt with global warming and carbon emissions. Although I can't remember every specific detail I remember one bit where they illustrated the carbon dioxide levels in air samples over time on a graph (they can get 'ancient' samples from air bubbles trapped within ice and tundra), and showed there is significant evidence to suggest this level is rising, and the rate at which it is rising is accelerating. If you take a quick look on Wikipedia's global warming article you can see the graphs for yourself.

One of the side effects of global warming is also a change in temperature extremes. It's not just 'warming' - things get a lot colder as well. Talking to my dad (think he's 55 now) who grew up here in England, the climate he remembers was a lot milder than what it is now. So it works both ways, hot and cold. I can't remember the exact explanation for this, but I remember researching it for some project/discussion/presentation thing awhile ago.

And is it just me or is that site a little dodgy? :?

I love the people who say "I dont believe in global warming, thus it doesnt exist!"
Yeah well i dont believe in gravity, so im gonna levitate for awhile. And the weather is getting a lot more unpredictable than it used to be, least, thats what alot of parents, elders, scientists say.
Warning: The above avatar is somewhat risque, VIEWER DISCRETION IS ADVISED

(I swear if you put up a more risque avatar, and Aez makes me change mine, you will be forced to watch "The Happening" until you enjoy watching it.)
