The following is a list of spells that are not allowed to be spammed.

The spells are put into groups based on similar effects. So for example, Hold Person and Hold Monster would be put in the same group.

Each group of spells follow a definition. Here are the groups and their definitions.


Hold/Stun - Any spell or ability that makes the target lose the ability to attack on their own accord.

Disable - Any spell or ability that causes the target to be disabled, but is still able to attack.

Death - Any spell or ability that causes instant death

Ability Drain - Any spell or ability that causes the target to lose stats in ability scores.

Level Drain - Any spell or ability that causes the target to temporarily lose levels.

Hide - Any spell or ability that hides the player from sight.

Singular - This group only refers to a single spell that can't be spammed, spells in this group can be used together in combination. Some notes may be added to these spells for further rulings.


If you use a spell from a group, then you can't use another spell from that group for 18 seconds against the same target. The spam timer starts after the effect ENDS.

Singular is the only exception, as explained in the definition.

* Earthquake is in both the Hold/Stun and Death Categories.

** Knockdown, Stunning Fist, and Terrifying are currently spammable with each other.

*** All spells or abilities in the Hide category cannot be used until the user has been visible for 18 seconds after the last Hide spell or ability expired. Note that Invisibility is not in this category and is spammable.

**** Unless Harm is being used on an Undead ally to heal him.

***** When Heal is used on the Undead to work as Harm.

****** Because the results for Prismatic Spray are random, it is under the Singular group.

If your spell does not completely cast, such as from Spell Failure or an Action Cancel, that spell does not count towards the spam count.


I'm sure this will solve some headache for all of us. If I happened to miss a spell that should be under one of the groups, please tell me. But I'm pretty sure I have them all covered.

An' what about Bigby's Interposing Hand?
I suppose it would fit under the Disable section..

Interposing is more of a debuff than a hold effect...

or is that not the one that gives -10 AB?

I guess Interposing could be added to the Disable list. Or under Singular at least. -10 AB is a pretty big penalty. Problem is that I can't edit in this forum.

Personally I would rather have it an AC debuff than an AB debuff. And I dont even play clerics.
