You forgot about devasting critical. Anyways....

I don't think it's a bad idea to give one free lvl 40. Except it's a pain in the ass for the DM's. I've lost a few 40's, not to mention how many chars I have to re-rebuild.

It was noones fault, but still most people would feel better with that gift.

We did a backup after the crash. Had the backup not been corrupted, we'd have all the characters up to date.

In addition, I'm exploring ways to restore the characters from pre-crash. We might be able to do it.

I would recommend to not to start new chars with the same name as the ones you lost so that if they can be retrieved there will be no duplicate issue when importing them. Maybe the whole server vault backup was corrupted, but maybe your player vault folder is not.

I have already discussed with Vlad the possibility of writing a script to pull them over, this will only work if the server stays up for long enough though.

Shame everyone is not like me, level 40 marks the end of a character to me, Leveling is the fun part.

while i see the merit of your philosophy Seph, some builds aren't much fun to play until they reach their pinnacle.

off topic - typing Seph just now reminded me of a bad-ass dude named Sephiroth.

this is a joke isnt it ?

since i make a char sheet befor creation i just checked and compared it to my vault and i aproximatly lost 1/3 of all my chars/lvls. i had hollydays the last 3 weeks and was playing a lot befor the crash.

really devastating kopfab:

i hope that dms will be online a bit more now and provide some restoration, at least 4-5 of my lvl 40s...

the main thing is the server is back in bidness, i count alot of missing characters, at least 20.

im more happy that we are up and running again then char's lost, see it as more reason to play, make them anew :)

Just to let people know, we will be running a script tomorrow to try and pull across the missing chars. Just a warning though, there is no guarantee for all characters as some of the character files have been corrupted.

You all forget the main part of what he said...Might. That does not necessarily mean the script will be a success, and if it is, there is a chance for many character's to be corrupted. If you can make a voyage into the cracked disc, perhaps Vlad can pull out the files. I wouldn't see why they would be corrupted seeing they would be saved onto a different folder then the rest of the server. But, if this does work, and I'm being optimistic here, it would prove for the better. If not, well, it won't. As Walter said, some builds are enjoying to play at the pinnacle of their creation. Such as my character Otevad. It was lost and I had made two different versions before creating a third and final successful one. It is an incredibly hard build to replicate. Such will be with similar circumstances with other's character's. Original builds made by original people who took a lot of their time through trial-and-error creating their character will be forced to start anew. And that's excluding the multitude of other character's that were lost. Of course the server is up, and we didn't loose all our character's, and that's the good part. Fortunately it will be successful, but if not, relvling those character's that were lost, 40's at least, to their previous stature would be a great reward for the rest of the player's. Walter lost six 40's. Who's to say other's haven't lost more. The last month would of basically been a waste of their time if nothing came out of it, which is basically what will happen if the script fails. I'm merely trying to tell you all to think through certain decisions before they are fully made.

edit: Oh, I see who you mean now *bangs head*

Anyway, I don't really understand what you mean about a lot of time spent making "original builds". I always level up my people as mages first, it makes the job go by super fast :P

I lost my only character I had created 10 minutes before the server went down, I had just finished leveling up to 10! And Vlad too.... Not that this matters, our vaults were empty from a year or so anyway, and we could pull some old chars for us from some ancient backup maybe.

Farlen, as Seph said, part of the fun is leveling them up and enjoying them as you play.

And Jantima, such is not the case for the majority of the player's. I understand you and Vlad have your character's on archive, but the rest of us aren't so lucky. Hopefully this new script to delve into the Lost Land's will be successful. I have a doubtful feeling that is will work, seeing as corrupted files won't be able to become un-corrupted. Let's put it into a figurative sense. It's like in a video-game. Your saving your data when your power turns off. When you attempt to load your saved data, it will be corrupted and you'll be unable to play. It's similar to what happened with AW, but far from the same. From what I've heard, and this is an educated guess, there is a 1:3 ratio chance of pulling out the character folders from the back-up unless the archive's aren't contaminated. Either you pull out all of the character's, none of the character's, or one in every three of the character's. It is a far-fetched theory, but we can try and we can hope. Have faith in the scripter's. ;)

I guess we will see. I believe most chars should be restored just fine. I wouldn't be surprised if my char that was on during the crash is also restored ok.

You may of been lucky Walter. I'm missing three character's, one is still only half-way leveled that was 40, and the one I leveled up to 18 last night is back to 12. Great. Only one of my character's was restored. In addition, the relvl I did on Barben was inconsequential, seeing as it was overwritten.

It appeared that any character I logged onto during the time when the characters were not updated by the script are still not updated...should I delete those characters and wait for the script to take effect on them, or...?
